Older adult: It is often debated who is to be considered an older adult. Most common understanding of the term, is a person within the age range of 65 +. Others argue the range begins at 55.

young old: The category “older adult” encompasses people between the ages 65-older, a very large range. In order to break the category down to be more descriptive of the diverse population, young old has been coined. Young old describes those 65-74 years of age.

Geriatrician: These are board certified medical doctors with specialized training in preventing and treating unique and often complicated health problems of the older adult. These doctors tend to be primary care physicians with additional training and certification in geriatrics.

Geropsychiatrist: a psychiatrist trained to deal specifically with the mental health concerns of an older adult

baby boomers: The cohort/generation of individuals born the 16 years after the end of WWII, from 1946-1960. The birth rate during this time period was so vast that the term was developed to help describe the sudden and drastic growth in the population of this generation. Also known as the boomers, and the silver tsunami.

Geriatric Care Manager:

Geriatric Social Worker: A Social Worker who works, has experience, and often special certification for practicing social work, clinical or otherwise with the older adult population.

Systems Theory: examining each aspect of the client including; community, family, work, and the individual so that a holistic understand will emerge enabling the most appropriate intervention. To understand the part you must first earn how it is effected by the whole. To understand the whole you must learn how it effects the identified part.

well-being:

family relational dynamics: the patterns of interactions or relating within a family members. Each family has unique dynamics with common patterns. All families have some helpful and some unhelpful dynamics.

aging process: our bodies change in many ways that affect the function of both individual cells and organ systems. These changes occur little by little and progress inevitably over time. However, the rate of this progression can be very different from person to person (healthaging.org). Socially the aging process is notable when functional, social or cognitive changes occur that effect how an individual functions and perceives him or herself.
